چکیده

Data on mercury levels in freshwater fish (mainly pike, perch, trout and char), from Norway, Sweden and Finland have been collected in a common database to assess spatial patterns as well as relationships with environmental factors such as atmospheric mercury deposition. A preliminary evaluation of fish Hg data from >1500 lakes shows that Hg levels referring to a 1-kg pike are highest in low-altitude lakes of the southern regions S. Norway, S+C. Sweden, and C. Finland, where regional medians are 0.5-0.8 mg/kg fw. In these regions, about 50-80 % of the lakes exceed 0.5 mg/kg and about 520(40) % of the lakes exceed 1.0 mg/kg. Fish Hg levels in high-altitude lakes are lower than in low-altitude lakes in the corresponding region.

Methylmercury in freshwater fish linked to atmospheric mercury deposition.

A connection between accumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) in wild fish populations and atmospheric mercury deposition has not been made. Large databases for both MeHg in fish and atmospheric mercury deposition have been assimilated from monitoring efforts spanning the contiguous United States. Here, we compare results of these data sets and show that state-wide average concentrations of MeHg in...

Assessment of Mercury Accumulation and Magnification in a Freshwater Food Chain: Sediment, Benthos and Benthivorous Fish

Background: Present study was conducted to measure the level of total mercury (tHg) in sediments, benthos and benthivorous fish (i.e., common carp) for determining Biota (Benthos)-Sediment Accumulation Factor (BSAF), as well as Biomagnification Factor (BMF) of tHg between two trophic levels of benthos and benthivorous fish caught from Sanandaj Gheshlagh Reservoir (SGR) in the west of Iran. Met...

Estimated variability of National Atmospheric Deposition Program/Mercury Deposition Network measurements using collocated samplers.

The National Atmospheric Deposition Program/Mercury Deposition Network (MDN) provides long-term, quality-assured records of mercury in wet deposition in the USA and Canada. Interpretation of spatial and temporal trends in the MDN data requires quantification of the variability of the MDN measurements. Variability is quantified for MDN data from collocated samplers at MDN sites in two states, on...

Recent declines in mercury concentration in a freshwater fishery: isolating the effects of de-acidification and decreased atmospheric mercury deposition in Little Rock Lake.

The atmospheric deposition of H+, SO4, and Hg to Little Rock Lake in northern Wisconsin has declined substantially during the past decade. Parallel decreases have been observed in the surface waters of the lake. Here we extend the observations to the fish community and we present evidence of a contemporaneous decline in levels of Hg in fish tissue. By comparing data from two separated basins of...

Levels of Mercury in Persian Gulf Frozen Fish Species

Severe discharge of sewage and industrial effluents into the Persian Gulf leads to the deposition of various types of heavy metals, especially lead and mercury, in the muscles of fish. Total mercury and methylmercury contents were determined in the edible parts (muscle tissue, fillet) of two different most popular frozen fish species from the Persian Gulf to ascertain whether the concentrations...
